Caught Up In All The Hoopla

So, I've been sitting here, going through all the bits of detritus in the wake of creating and running Radio Memphis. Good stuff and some not so much. When it occurred to me this little blog had been neglected. It happens. Finding something to write about, dealing with running a business, keeping up with all the other things happening in life, etc. When it dawned on me that sitting down and writing about something is one thing, speaking about it is something else.

Those of you who follow this blog deserve better. I do appreciate you dealing with my inconsistencies but that isn't very fair. Most of you know that I am on the air at Radio Memphis from noon to 6PM CT Monday - Friday and again on Sunday nights from 8PM to 10PM (usually till later). For a guy who has been in the broadcast business pretty much my whole life, I find it easy to sit at the mic and do what it is that I do. Dog and Pony Show aside, it is enjoyable and I do derive a good deal of amusement out of the "craft".

The whole point of this blog was for me to elaborate on the things happening in and around the broadcast business. There are some real nuggets laying around in the archives here if you haven't seen them as of yet. Hence the title Off The Air. Although, it was rather ironic the title of this blog became rather prophetic for a few months in 2011 when I was actually off the air. Of course, all that has changed. In a very good way.

Since the creation of Radio Memphis and all that it has become, the world has changed and it is continuing to change. People are getting into all sorts of groovy things. Internet radio is one of those and I am truly thankful for that. However, the reading of blogs, not so much, it seems. Don't misunderstand me here, I am not pulling the plug on this blog at all. In fact, quite the opposite.

Coming soon, to this blog, the Radio Memphis website and iTunes, I will be producing a new podcast. Those of you who subscribe to this blog will then get regular updates when the podcast is done. There will also be the ability to subscribe to the thing through iTunes and of course, through your normal cruising of the Radio Memphis website.

It was a natural conclusion do this since what I do for a living is sit in front of mic and run my mouth. Granted, it's always great fun to do so when there is someone there with me on the mic and we're running our mouths about whatever happens to come up.

Having said all this, keep in mind something. It ain't soup, yet. We're still in the process of laying down all the pre-production elements. Gathering the necessary bits we need to make this thing come to life. If it is one thing I like to do in projects such as these, go all the way.

The format of this thing will be about an hour long. Weekly episodic podcasts with various guests we find interesting. It will be our hope that you find them interesting as well. Of course, there will be the artists who are played on Radio Memphis, local folks we all know and some outside of the area you know as well. Thanks to the modern technology that is the internet, we can talk to some groovy people from all over the place and bring their story to you.

But, wait there's more! (There always is.) Some of the time, we will be recording the podcast in front of an audience that you can attend. This is something I have always wanted to do. In my eyes, it gives the fans a chance to be a part of something they listen to regularly. This will come in due time and you all will know when and where.

The one thing about working in commercial radio (which includes Radio Memphis), is that it is not always practical to do some sort of long form program. Things get in the way, like the clock and all the other elements associated with the medium. A podcast is a format that will allow me to stretch my legs a bit, as it were and it is something you can choose to be a part of on your time. You can listen at your leisure, whenever and wherever you are.

It wouldn't be fair to call it a Radio Show, since it isn't on the radio per se. However, it will be a show. If you like what you hear, it will be my hope you tell others about it so they can enjoy it as well. After all, this is all about being an entertainer. If you are entertained, then I have done my job.

In the meantime, you might have some questions. I'll take the liberty here to answer them as best as I can.

So, where are we with this thing? I'll update here as we get closer to debuting the pilot episode.

What is thing going to be called? I can't tell you, yet.

Who's going to be on? I can't tell you that, either.

What places are you going to be recording this? I'll have to get back to you on that.

When is the pilot episode going to be ready? Soon.

I hope that answers some of your questions. In the meantime, sit tight and as always, stay tuned...
