Eddie Dattel & Wally Ford Talk Songwriting

Songwriting is the art few people will talk about. Who knows why? But, not in this case. I got to sit down with these two guys as they talk about Eddie's new record called Another Side of the Sun. They play a bit from that collection and there are couple of songs played from the disc itself in this episode.

Plus, wrapping up 2017. Whatever that means.

The Annual Christmas War and John Nemeth

For me at least, the best part of Christmas is it being over. Can't say I am a big fan of this holiday. It tends to bring out the absolute worst in people and it has lost all of what the holiday was about. I just hunker down and wait for all of this to blow over. But enough of all that.

In this episode, Jeff and I sat down with John Nemeth and talked about his current collection of songs from the Feeling Freaky CD. We had a great time in the studio with lots of laughs and a great performance with his band.

Plato, The Romans and Josh McLean

Government control is a broad subject. It is all over the news. Being a student of history, I can't help but draw certain parallels from the past to the present. Seems heavy, but it really isn't especially when you start talking about Net Neutrality and CBD oil.

Plus, long time friend of Radio Memphis Josh McLean joins the show for a whirlwind discussion of all sorts of topics. If that wasn't enough, a performance from his band Heels also happens here with a couple of tunes that was recorded in Studio C at Pirate Radio Studios.

Lightnin' Malcolm & A Hill Country Production

Lightnin' Malcolm
It is always a great time when this guy drops into the studio at Radio Memphis. Lightnin' Malcolm was originally scheduled to back up the newly Grammy nominated R. L. Boyce. R. L. had to miss the show that night due to a flat tire and a dead phone. But, Malcolm was in the studio and a fantastic show happened despite the blues Mr. Boyce was experiencing that night.

Lightnin' Malcolm told some great stories from the road, what it is like out there and the many people he has played with. He was on with us for three hours that night, this show represents about a third of that night and is great fun. Wait until he tells the story about his work with Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin.

Note: In his studio performances during this show, he sings, plays guitar and drums at the same time.

It was a good time and an interesting look at the business of vlogging. William also shot some stuff about Radio Memphis for an upcoming episode of his show.

That Guy Has Become a Problem

Borrowing from the Radio Memphis in The Morning bit, How Not To Be That Guy, I seem to have a problem with what some people are actually doing our here in the real world. What started out as a simple observation of some of the silly and harmless, yet stupid things people do ever once in a while has become what seems to be standard unapologetic behavior.

Which begs the question, has there always been the same percentage of people in our society that are That Guy or is it we just see more of them?

But the reality is they are having a real crisis because the pressures of show business being what they are. They are complaining about the difficulties of creating valid content on a weekly basis and their incessant quest for more likes and validation from their public. I predicted this many years ago. I said that, "... those corporate bastards will rape this industry and take everything good from it and after they do that, someday they will leave it's mangled corpse on the side of the road as remnant of something that happened."

But, it did give rise to the thought about how businesses tend to appeal to the most people by being somewhat bland.

No Apologies

Given the nature of this episode, we decided to give our advertisers a break. Plus, there is no music in this one either. The reasoning behind it was simple. Some might think of it as being proactive, others might have harsher things to say about that decision. Either way, I don't really care.

The nature of this episode is a little more rough than usual. The reasoning behind that is simple. Sometimes, to get ahead of a difficult situation, you must meet it head on and deal with it in all of its ugliness.

When that happens, there are some pretty offensive things that get said. This may be one of those times. Having said all of that, be aware. Some of the things I speak of in this episode may be considered highly offensive by some.

But, kudos to the city for staying on top of the job at hand.

This episode gets a little dark. The reason is simple enough, we all have these little conversations going on inside our heads where something seems to be questioning every little thing we do. Every decision about to be made, even as our day to day living comes under scrutiny... by ourselves.

It's kind of what makes us who we are. However, those questions tend to get a little difficult. Coming from the perspective of what I do for a living, these little internal interviews become a little abusive. That again, is what makes all of us tick on some level.

New Media Doesn't Mean No Media

You can think of this as part 1 of a two part show regarding the state of the media in this country. In this episode, I take a pretty fervent stand in defending the news media, in general terms, mind you. Part two will look into the actual people that make up the news media. More on that next week.

There has been some talk that the President Elect wants to close the White House Press Room and do away with the White House Press Corps. Can he do that? Sure. He can do what he wants. Is it a good idea? Nope.

Artificially Intelligent

It would appear that we as a society are welcoming the Internet of Things into our lives on a very deliberate and slow process. Step by step, artificial intelligence is coming into everything whether we want it to or not.

But it is not just machines I am concerned with. As ridiculous as it may sound, there are a good number of people out there who seem to be artificially intelligent. Scary, right?

I did ask Siri if she planned on taking over the world. She responded in this episode.

2016- Bye, Felicia

If you are reading this, congratulations! You survived 2016. In year marked by lots of death and the loss of familiar names and faces, we somehow managed to survive the overall divisiveness of the year. In fact, "divisive" is a good word to describe 2016. Not that much of the year would be recalled at all. It's not like we're going to be sitting at the bar reminiscing years past and the the subject of 2016 should come up. I seriously doubt any of that nonsense will happen.

But, there were a few highlights to 2016. Namely that it is now over.

Plus music from Yella P Featuring Dulaa.
