Cabin Fever with Rew Starr

If there is one thing to be said about the Covid 19 pandemic is that most people seem to have been coping with cabin fever fairly well. You could argue that artists in general would be the ones who would be having the most difficult time with the notion of being contained in their homes all this time. In this episode, Ric sits down with New York musician and artist Rew Starr and they talk about the impact a lock down can have on an artist.

The good news is that Rew discovered something new about her self and has made her time inside much more bearable by being constructive. Also in this episode, you'll hear her band The Rewlettes and their version of the classic To Sir With Love and the story behind the recording and how their video was made.

The Turkey is A Lie & Andrew Cole

It is one of the few times of the year when just about everybody is eating the exact same thing. People will go on and on about how it is their favorite meal of the year. But, is it? If people really liked the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, don't you think they would have it more than one time of the year? If people were to let their traditions down, it would cripple the turkey industry. Let's not even get started about Christmas dinner.

Also, a conversation with Andrew Cole, a musician originally from Liverpool, UK and now residing in California is trying to make it through the pandemic. His view of the music industry and what the world will look like after this is interesting. Plus, a performance from Andrew Cole and his song Cover Me.

NEXT WEEK: Coyote Motel

Doin' The New Thing & Nate Soundz

With a show that has been around as long as From Radioland, things have to change a bit. To do this correctly, one should tread carefully into new areas unlike Ric who moves with reckless abandon. This is the "new" show and it's re-tooled format (whatever that means) and as such along comes an interview with a new artist from California, Nate Soundz plus you will hear one of his tracks.

Also in this episode, Ric gets into some news from Radio Memphis in how the pandemic may have been a kick in the pants at the station, things are starting to return to some sort of "normal" (also, whatever that means) as the original shows begin to return to the air.

What A Cover Act

There it is, you see a post about one of your favorite bands in the whole world is coming to your town for a show. You grew up with their music, you have all of their records, it's been years since you have seen them live. You are going to the show. When you get there you realize that not one member of the band on stage is from the original act. They sound the same. They sort of look the same. But they are playing music that is ostensibly not theirs. It belongs to the band.

But, here we are at this show and we paid how much to see this cover act? In this episode, Ric talks about the business that is keeping the name alive of these classic rock acts all for the sake of selling tickets. Every member has been replaced though, but are they still the same? Also, the art of letting go. Plus, music from Tullie Brae.

NEXT WEEK: The 24 hour news cycle is making you dizzy. And it's getting worse.

Jerre Dye & Marie-Stéphane Bernard

Opera singer Marie-Stéphane Bernard returns to Radioland bringing her friend Jerre Dye. Jerre is originally from the Midsouth and now lives in Chicago. He's an actor, director, producer and writer. Jerre has taken on the one woman show Sounds of A Dream starring Marie-Stéphane.

It is a biographical look at her life and career from Paris, France to Memphis, Tennessee and all the points in between. In this episode you will hear a demo of one of the songs in the production as well as how one writes such a story. Plus, another round of  playing favorites.

For more, head over to Marie-Stéphane's Facebook page.

Benny Turner & Cash McCall

This episode marks 5 complete years of production for the show From Radioland. As I had been talking about over the past couple of weeks, we'll making some changes. The content for this show has been from The Booze & Blues Show at Radio Memphis.

Well, the time has come to move that content over to the RMOD (Radio Memphis On Demand) collection. This is a good thing since that move will allow us to get those blues shows online much faster than trying to shoehorn it into this show.

So, what of this show? I'll explain in the show.

Also, a visit with 2 legendary blues musicians who had not worked together for over 40 years. They got together and made a CD. You'll hear some of those songs as well as some of the stories as to how this collection of songs was made.

NEXT WEEK: Technology sucking the fun out of everything with Dianna Fryer.

Danuel Gales, Eric Gales, Singa B & Robert Allen Parker

This was a fun night. Danuel Gales was celebrating his birthday and chose Radio Memphis to do the celebrating. Which was a good thing because his brother, Eric Gales called in and we had a chat with him about an upcoming show here in Memphis. We also learned he likes apple pie. It's pretty funny how that came about.

Later, Robert Allen Parker sat down and talked about his latest record and the project he is working on now. Plus, you'll hear some cuts off the new CD.

Gee Whiz, It's Carla Thomas

I recently spent some quality time with Carla Thomas. In 1961 she scored her first Billboard hit with Gee Whiz. In 1966, she repeated that with B-A-B-Y Baby with that song seeing the light again by being featured in the movie Baby Driver.

She spoke of how her path to show business was not quite what you'd think it was. Never seeking it out, the spotlight found her and her music still stands the test of the time.

Massimo Bevilacqua Is A Machine

One of the great American imports is our friend Massimo Bevilacqua. He stopped into our studios recently with his brand new CD entitled Naked. It was a great time learning about the music scene in his native Italy and how he fears for the upcoming generations. You'll also hear why he called "The Machine".

Plus, is it me or does the world seem a little extra depressing? Guess what, there is some help.

A Conversation With Robert Allen Parker

Robert is a sort of a rare breed of entertainer. He was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He is steeped in the music culture from here and has devoted his life to the very thing he has studied all of his years.

This is a fantastic conversation with someone who is not only happy about his art, he is proud of being able to live his life as a Memphis musician. And what a life it has been so far.

Plus, you may have invited a spy in your house.

Going For The Bronze with Liz Kinnmark

You might have been watching the Olympics. I certainly have. What is funny about that is the simple reality I have never been a big fan of this spectacle. Admittedly, this has been very entertaining and quite a good bit of fun to enjoy. The politics of it and all.

Also in this show, Liz Kinnmark, The Bendy Beast herself makes her second appearance on the show to talk about an upcoming event (which has already happened but go with me on this) and to talk about some other naughty fun.

If that isn't enough, music from Airside.

Unoriginal Creativity

We are all connected. We allowed this. We freely gave ourselves over to social media. It is a hell of a platform. You can pretty much do whatever is you want to do. You can be creative, original, unique and be yourself. The problem is, you aren't doing any of that.

Why?

Good question. We talk about that here. Plus music from Rachel Wise.

The Music of Bill Lusk

I have learned it is well worth it to take the long way around the barn to get to what is important. This episode is an example of that. During the last week of October, I sat down in studio C at Pirate Radio Studios with Bill Lusk, Rick Malchow, Willie Hall and Steve Davis.

This wasn't just a moment to capture these stories. There was something much deeper than all of that. There had been a sort of sense of urgency in play to get this interview done. You see, the plan at one point was to do thing live on the air at Radio Memphis.

When you hear this episode, you will understand why that was simply not possible.

This episode was a first in a couple of ways in that after it was recorded and heavily edited, we aired it on the Booze & Blues Show at Radio Memphis. Now, we present it here for your consumption. If you were listening that night, you didn't hear why we did what we did to make this happen.

Now, you will know exactly why.

Viva La Revolucion

It's happening. Everyday, there is some change in the media landscape. Television programming moving toward streaming technology. Radio stations are going off the air and their content becoming increasingly irrelevant as a flood of streaming radio stations, podcasters and broadcasters are making their presence known.

So, what does one do while this revolution is happening? Sit on the sidelines and watch... cat videos.

Plus, music from The Subteens.
