Memphis Deep

This is the last episode for 2018. We sat down with Bob Kelsey, Leroy Clay and David Dunn who make up the band Memphis Deep. A fair amount of music is in this episode plus some good stories along the way.

Also, since this is the last show of 2018, I can't help what the next year holds for all of us. What I can tell you is that there will be a cool little thing extra coming From Radioland in 2019.

NEXT WEEK: The return of Tlaxica this time with Pope and Zeke Johnson celebrates the holidays.

Stay tuned...

23 December 2018

Tlaxica

I keep meeting new people in Memphis that moved here because of the music scene. That's pretty cool. Tlaxica, from Tlaxica & Pope did the same thing. She sat down with me in the studio to talk about why she came to Memphis and she managed to sneak onto the air some cuts from their forthcoming EP.

Plus, she is fairly well known in the gospel scene and we talked a little about that as well.

The government may be kind of shut down, but we aren't.

NEXT WEEK: Memphis Deep

Stay tuned...

16 December 2018

Danuel Gales, Eric Gales, Singa B & Robert Allen Parker

This was a fun night. Danuel Gales was celebrating his birthday and chose Radio Memphis to do the celebrating. Which was a good thing because his brother, Eric Gales called in and we had a chat with him about an upcoming show here in Memphis. We also learned he likes apple pie. It's pretty funny how that came about.

Later, Robert Allen Parker sat down and talked about his latest record and the project he is working on now. Plus, you'll hear some cuts off the new CD.

NEXT WEEK: Tlaxica & Pope - minus Pope.

Stay tuned...

09 December 2018

Brother Boulevard & Individual 1

I think it is only a matter of time before someone names their band Individual 1. That is, if it hasn't happened already. Nevertheless, I do talk a little about the latest revelations regarding said Individual 1.

Also, a great time with another brand new act, Brother Boulevard. You'll hear a conversation with Kyle Roberts and Gabriel Brown about their new act and you'll hear some songs from them.

NEXT WEEK: Danuel Gales, Eric Gales & Robert Allen Parker

Stay tuned...

02 December 2018

Carla Thomas, Willie Hall & Vanese Thomas - Dropping Bombs

The musical influence of the Thomas family in Memphis is enormous. Rufus Thomas was a true showman. His children learned that craft from the best. Carla Thomas scored 2 major hits in the 1960s with Gee Whiz and B-A-B-Y (the latter showing up recently on the Baby Driver soundtrack) along the way, the time spent at STAX was important for Carla.

Also, our great friend Willie Hall joined the conversation to talk about his days with STAX and Isaac Hayes and Booker T. & The MGs. And then Carla's sister, Vanese got on the air and dropped a bomb.

NEXT WEEK: Kyle & Gabe are Brother Boulevard

Stay tuned...

25 November 2018

John D'Amato & The Delta Project

This is the 250th episode From Radioland. A milestone, perhaps. In essence, 250 consecutive weeks of this show have happened with only a couple missing their Sunday deadlines due to some technical issue. Not a bad run, so far.

After nearly 5 years of this show (and me not paying attention to the current episode number), we have come to a fitting show for this monument.

We have known John for a long time and he has been with us since the beginning. He called in from a recording session where he is working up his latest collection of songs. You'll get an update. After that, there is a great time with another friend of Radio Memphis. The Delta Project. Lot's of laughs and lots of music in this episode. Plus, tales from the road.

Note: Here's to another 250 (or so) episodes From Radioland. My personal thanks to Mark Caldwell who makes these things happen for us and to all the other people who have helped get this show where it is right this moment.

NEXT WEEK: Carla Thomas, Willie Hall & Vanese Thomas - Dropping Bombs

18 November 2018

Mark Anthony Lee & Willie Covington

I love talking to the veteran musicians out there. The ones who came up through the 60's and 70's and lived to tell about those days. These two guys are great. We talked about everything from working in the movie business to singing with The Platters and everything in between.

A fantastic conversation with Mark Anthony Lee and Willie Covington.

Also, I have a fairly strict "no nazi" policy and some of you out there seem to have taken issue with that.

NEXT WEEK: John D'Amato and The Delta Project

11 November 2018

Andrea Staten & The Goats of Yoga

No, that is not the name of a band. Although, not a bad one. Andrea is a musician from Oxford, Mississippi and she drove in to have some fun in the studio. She talks about her love of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues and how she learned to play that style.

You'll hear some of her songs in this episode. About the goats? You'll just have to listen.

NEXT WEEK: Mark Anthony Lee & Willie Covington

04 November 2018

Mick Kolassa & The Taylor Made Blues Band

"Free Range Blues" is a term you may not be familiar with but by the time this episode is over, you will understand exactly what it means. Mick has been on this show several times however, this time out, he brought the band. It's a large time.

Also, there is a local radio station that (for some stupid reason) thought it would be a great idea to switch their format to 24 Christmas music on Halloween. Seriously, WTF?

Our thanks to Mark Caldwell who made this and all our other shows possible.

NEXT WEEK: Andrea Staten

28 October 2018

Dr. Feelgood Potts & Sheba Potts-Wright

This particular show has been a couple of years in the making. Trying to get everyone's schedule together and the right time for everyone to sit down and have a conversation. Finally, it happened. This is a great story of two legendary entertainers as father and daughter on the stage together and separately.

You'll also hear some of their music and the stories behind those recordings.

NEXT WEEK: Mick Kolassa & The Taylor Made Blues Band

21 October 2018

Minister Suhkara Yahweh (Sweet Willie Wine)

Surprisingly, there is not much on the web about this week's guest. Now there is at least, this. Minister Suhkara Yahweh was once known as Sweet Willie Wine. A man who had been in prison and came out with a new plan. To get involved in the Civil Rights Movement here in Memphis.

In April of 1968, he was one block away from The Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Since then, he has led a life working in the non-violent peace movement promoting civil rights and other causes.

You will hear the entire conversation as it happened on the air at Radio Memphis.

The Italian Job & The Juke Joint Allstars

This is a fun episode where there are 2 solid acts. First up, our friend Massimo Bevilacqua has teamed up with Gloria Turrini to put together The Italian Job. They are currently on tour in the U.S. for several weeks and added a stop to the Radio Memphis studios for an appearance. They are a lot of fun.

Also, who would of thought The Juke Joint Allstars would be a band with 100 members? You'll hear that story and more plus a performance from this legendary act right here.

Scott Bomar & Howard Grimes

I swear, everytime I sit down with Howard Grimes, I learn something new about him. This time, he told me about how he played drums on Carla Thomas' Gee Whiz record. Also, he brought along Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys.

You'll also hear some of the music they collaborated on over the years including one of the tracks from Cyndi Lauper she did with B.B. King.

Tom Graves on Robert Johnson

Celebrated author Tom Graves came to the studio recently. Jeff & I had a great conversation about the legendary Robert Johnson. Tom wrote THE book about the blues legend. We learned about some of the myths and stories surrounding Johnson and found a lot of truths about him

You'll also hear why the Radio Memphis show Booze & Blues is called that. It was celebration of the life of Robert Johnson, for sure.

Brenda Taylor Makes The Trip

The daughter of Eddie Taylor, Brenda, drove to Memphis from Chicago just to be on the Booze & Blues show at Radio Memphis. We could not have been more honored. Her childhood was fascinating considering she grew up with one of the greatest bluesmen of the day.

She tells her story and sings with the Radio Memphis Studio Orchestra. Plus, you'll get to sample some of her family's music in this fantastic episode.

The Radio Memphis Studio Orchestra was Willie Hall (drums), Judge Booker (bass) and Brad Webb (guitars).

Keith Douglas & Duwayne Burnside

It's a first for this show. Two guests in one action packed episode. First up is Keith Douglas, guitarist for Tora Tora. Keith talks about the history of this great rock band plus he shares the news about the brand new album headed your way very soon.

Next up, Duwayne Burnside sits down with Jeff & I to talk about his new CD plus many other things including the definition of "Burnside Style". And if that wasn't enough, Duwayne and his band played a few tunes in this wild episode From Radioland.

Ms. Zeno The Mojo Queen

She will put a spell on you. This episode is a bit different. At her insistence, we are releasing the entire broadcast from the Booze & Blues show a couple of weeks ago. We went through Ms. Zeno's new CD, track by track.

We also talked about how the CD was recorded, who is on it and what is coming up next with her.

Sit back and relax and listen as Ms. Zeno The Mojo Queen takes us on a cool musical trip.

Willfully Ignorant

There seems to be quite a bit of willful ignorance going around. A friend of mine brought that to my attention while talking about the state of the society these days. He said he was backing away from using the word "idiot" because it wasn't quite accurate. Instead, the term "willful ignorance" is being used and it makes perfect sense.

Also, our old friend Mick Kolassa brought forth a new collection of songs and we'll hear a couple of them on this episode.

26 August 2018

Big T & Johnny Drummer

It is always a great time when Big T & The Family step into the studio. That' exactly what happened a couple of weeks ago. There was one notable difference though. This time, Big T brought along the legendary Johnny Drummer to play some keys.

Also in this episode, I'm starting to think the electric scooters littering the sidewalks and streets are for the birds.

19 August 2018

Sharde Thomas & The Rising Star Fife & Drum Band

This was a fascinating conversation I got have with Sharde Thomas and her band. There is a part of the blues scene you may not recognize. But, don't let that stop you from hearing the stories behind a type of music originally used as a form of communication. It's a great story told from the grand daughter of Otha Turner, the lovely Sharde Thomas.

Also, Jesus and the Devil are apparently fighting it out in Arkansas.

Walking East & West with Pops Fountaine

Pops has been a long time friend of Radio Memphis. He is originally from Chicago where he has been a percussionist for many great artists over the years. When he came to Memphis, he found himself on stage with many more great musicians.

Through all of this, Pops has learned many of life's greatest lessons on and off the stage. Plus, his stories are moving, touching and down right hilarious.

Frank Monteleone & Blind Mississippi Morris

When we were on the air the night this was taped, we had no idea what was going to happen aside from there being some great music from a fantastic guitar player and his band. Just before we went on, I was informed that Blind Mississippi Morris was in the studio and I knew right then we were all in for a real treat.

And so are you.

Enjoy!

Gee Whiz, It's Carla Thomas

I recently spent some quality time with Carla Thomas. In 1961 she scored her first Billboard hit with Gee Whiz. In 1966, she repeated that with B-A-B-Y Baby with that song seeing the light again by being featured in the movie Baby Driver.

She spoke of how her path to show business was not quite what you'd think it was. Never seeking it out, the spotlight found her and her music still stands the test of the time.

Stepping Off The Mothership with Harold Beane

If there was some sort of an accurate record out there regarding just how many times a guitar player had his work sampled, Harold Beane would probably win. Harold played all the guitar parts for Isaac Hayes iconic Hot Buttered Soul album. He also spent some quality time with George Clinton and Funkadelic.

And this is just some of the story.

Wait until he tells the sad story of the plane crash that killed Otis Redding and most of the Bar Kays. He was supposed to be on that flight.

The Architects of Memphis Music

History is a fun subject for me. Especially when you get the opportunity to talk to those who actively created iconic historical moments. Howard Grimes, Percy & Spencer Wiggins did just that. In this episode, Jeff and I sat down with these three gentlemen to learn about the very early days of that Memphis sound, where it came from and how it happened.

Also, you'll learn what it was like for African-American performers who worked the road and studios to bring that special sound to homes around the world.

Everyone has a tale to tell about their customer service nightmares. Major corporations who treat you more as a number than a human. It is inevitable and there is no way out. But man, when that bell rings and I am getting screwed, that fight is on, Jack.

I'll tell you about a little trick I learned in this episode. Also a great time with Gypsy Heartz with some stories and songs are right here.

The Seven Year Itch

Radio Memphis has been on the air for seven years. Now that I think about that, it can either seem like it was just yesterday we put the thing on the air OR, it can seem like this has been a really long seven years. At any rate, I did take a little look back on what we have built.

Also, Karen Altman Latham came in the studio to chat about songwriting and to play a little. It's all right here.

In The Absence of Reason

After spending some time in the social media echo chamber bouncing about through the news cycle, it occurred to me there is something missing from all of this, reason. There is a lot of tough talk out there from people who are propped up by their hidden identities. These people blindly write their feelings with no real purpose. Surely, they aren't trying to convince someone of their superior point of view.

But what happens when these same "flame throwers" get out in public. Are they the same person? No.

Plus a conversation and performance with Sorianna Wood.

Suffer The Children

It's in the news and a good number of God fearing Americans are turning a blind eye to this horrendous act going on right now. The separation of families, specifically children from their parents under the guise of stopping illegal immigration. Guess what? It's really isn't a matter of having political differences anymore. It is now have a difference of opinion on a moral level.

Something else, if you want to try and defend this despicable act, you can't unless you are just as despicable of a human being as those who put this policy into play.

On a much lighter note, Mark Wiklund came to the studio talk songwriting and to perform a few songs.

Massimo Bevilacqua Is A Machine

One of the great American imports is our friend Massimo Bevilacqua. He stopped into our studios recently with his brand new CD entitled Naked. Robert is a sort of a rare breed of entertainer. He was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He is steeped in the music culture from here and has devoted his life to the very thing he has studied all of his years.

This is a fantastic conversation with someone who is not only happy about his art, he is proud of being able to live his life as a Memphis musician. And what a life it has been so far.

The Delta Project and Uncomfortable Statements

Like everyone, I have opinions about certain things. What is interesting about that is the simple fact I enjoy the reactions of people when I make certain statements which are not always agreeable to a lot of people. Not that such statements are horribly rude. For example, I have never had any interest in The Walking Dead and I have yet to see one episode of Game of Thrones.

To me, what is funny is the reactions of those who hear such things and the always amusing reaction I get. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

Plus a great conversation with some ling time friends of Radio Memphis, The Delta Project.

How To Lose an Election with Kieran Hilbert & Friends

I know the title sounds suspect. The two subjects are not related. But something happened to me this morning which caught me a little off guard and gave rise to the 2 ways you can lose my vote if you were to run for some sort of political office.

Also, Kieran Hilbert & Friends are from Germany. They came to Memphis to play. They also came to Radio Memphis to talk and play. It was a big time when Dianna joined me in the studio for this international incident.

We talked a bit about what cotton patch soul blues really is and the people behind that unique sound. You'll also hear a little about the history of the Kimbrough family and the now gone Junior Kimbrough's Juke Joint.

Kids These Days and Kenny Brown

Apparently, the young drinkers out there have a problem with their inability to hold their liquor. Instead of learning how to drink properly, brewers and distillers are making weaker beverages. What the hell? You know what is really driving this? Social media.

Also, Jeff and I sat down with Kenny Brown for a talk about the blues and several songs in the Hill Country Blues style.

There is a new trick Siri does, you might have heard about it and you can bet your boots Apple is going to not let her do this much longer. But, I got her to do it and recorded her doing it for all of history. You should be able to duplicate this little trick after you hear her do it on this show.

Also, Liz Mandeville stopped by from Chicago. To be fair, she was in Clarksdale but we were fortunate to have her spend some time in the studio with Jeff and I.

It was a large time as it always is when you spend time with Liz.

An Evening with Howard Grimes

This episode is a little over 2 hours. Frankly, it is pretty much at the upper limit I think most shows like this should be. Having said that, the conversation at hand here is one of the more remarkable conversations I had been involved with.

Dianna Fryer joined the conversation and she was able to get Howard to tell some really beautiful stories. You are also going to hear a bunch fantastic stories about creating "that Memphis sound". Some very funny moments and some truly touching times are all reflected here in this episode.

Road Trippin' and an Evening with Booker Brown

I was recently in Texas (long story) and had a bit of time to myself on the way back. It's an 11 hour drive. During all this time, I started noticing a couple of interesting patterns out there. Apparently, billboard advertising space must be had on the cheap since most of the one's I saw were outdated or had "Advertise Here" on them.

There is something else rather interesting out there. A lot of porn shops in the middle of nowhere.

Plus, Jeff and I spent some time with one of the greats. Booker Brown. He had with him Albert Sutherland on guitar. Then, all of a sudden, Willie Hall showed up to play some drums.

You might have been watching the Olympics. I certainly have. What is funny about that is the simple reality I have never been a big fan of this spectacle. Admittedly, this has been very entertaining and quite a good bit of fun to enjoy. The politics of it and all.

Also in this show, Liz Kinnmark, The Bendy Beast herself makes her second appearance on the show to talk about an upcoming event (which has already happened but go with me on this) and to talk about some other naughty fun.

The Superb Owl and Sean "Bad" Apple

Those of you who know me will know my feelings regarding the NFL and it's absurdities. The big game is certainly the pinnacle of this absurd pastime. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people who put a lot into the sport and its outcomes. All of this, to me at least, makes the whole thing kind of silly. I certainly don't put much stock in the thing. You can tell, because this post and the attached episode of the show was done during the game.

Also in this episode, Jeff and I sat down with Sean "Bad" Apple to talk about the business of the blues as well as hear a little of what this man does just about every day on Beale Street. Not so much.

Comcast had an issue. We were knocked off the air. It would be after 1:00AM local time before we would be back on. Or, so we were told.
