On A Certain List & Ian Guerin

There is an old saying that goes, "Sometimes the sun will shine on a dog's ass." Although we are not 100% sure exactly what that means, it does seem to hold a bit of truth when it comes to this show. The fine people at Hollywood Entertainment News put out a list of the "Best/Most Entertaining Podcast Hosts of 2020." As shocking as it was to even make the list, Ric found himself at number 25.

There are some great hosts and shows represented on that list as well. This turned out to be quite the honor. And to think Ric nearly killed off this show.

Also in this episode, Ric sits down with R&B hitmaker Ian Guerin for a conversation about writing music and the entertainment life in a pandemic.

Change is Like the Wind. Sometimes, It Blows

It's come to this. At least for this moment. After a lot of behind the scenes wrangling, organization, scheduling and copious amounts of adult language, the latest chapter in the tale that is the show of From Radioland, Ric is ready to unveil all the new changes.

As with any show such as this, you have to make some adjustments. Some of those adjustments aren't that easy. In the end, we hope it's worth it for you in the audience. Not that there were any real secrets here, From Radioland is evolving to it's newest format with the added bonus of one other act of defiance. What is that, you ask? Well, take a listen.

NEXT WEEK: And so it begins...

Disorganization Skills

As work is underway in re-tooling From Radioland, Ric takes a few moments to talk about one of the facets involved in the production of this show. It should be noted that what he mentions here can (and should be) applied to any endeavor you may partake in should it be your own podcast or your everyday work at hand.

In the past, Ric has always had issues with dealing with a calendar. Sure, there are some handy digital applications out there which make the whole process easier, except Ric seems to have to make an appointment in his calendar to update his calendar. The frustration can run him and you in circles.

NEXT WEEK: Audience From The Fishbowl

The Vocal Allure

There are several reasons why audio on demand is so popular. Podcasts included. The basic reason would be convenience. But there is more to it than meets the ear, if you will. In this episode Ric takes a look at the implications of the human voice and why we as humans desire to have a connection with that. It doesn't seem to matter how introverted we may be, we still crave the sound of some one talking.

The trick is to talk about something that may be of interest to the listener. Broadcasters know this and because of this little fact, podcasts and live broadcasts are rather popular. Also in this episode, the unpopular thought of the week.

Next week: Why some broadcasters are lying to you.

Who Wants A Slice of Data Pie?

The thing about the internet is that content used to be king. What really is more valuable is data. Numbers. You. There are those out there who make it their business to keep an eye an where you are going on the internet, what it is you are looking at and what it is you are searching for and buying.

This information is pure gold to advertising agencies. The thing is, that information is not really all that valuable. In this episode, Ric takes a look at Ad Tech and how it doesn't work and how more and more companies are shying away from it, after they have taken it for a test drive. There is a very simple formula for working with advertisers in a broadcast and Ric will explain. Listen now.

An Evolution is Coming

Over the years, From Radioland has gone from being a weird, long, rambling thing to what it is now. Rather concise and somewhat structured. Guess what? I'm gonna change things up a bit.

Don't panic.

What is currently in the show is not going anywhere. We're just going to add a few things to the production. I'll tell you about some of these changes in this episode.

Plus music from Hardaway.

It's a Comcast Christmas

This is the last show of 2016. Sounds ominous, I know. Just getting this episode in the can has been a pain in the ass. Not that I would expect any listener of this show to care so much about that issue.

It's no big deal, really. Especially when you put things into the real perspectives of how difficult things can be for others. We never really know what others are going through. People, for the most part, tend to hide their issues from others. It's a sense of pride, really.

Having said that, I will say this... "The show must go on".

Plus music from Special Shoes.

Viva La Revolucion

It's happening. Everyday, there is some change in the media landscape. Television programming moving toward streaming technology. Radio stations are going off the air and their content becoming increasingly irrelevant as a flood of streaming radio stations, podcasters and broadcasters are making their presence known.

So, what does one do while this revolution is happening? Sit on the sidelines and watch... cat videos.

Plus, music from The Subteens.

Famous Ass

One of the perks of my job is the occasional interaction with celebrities. For the most part, they are pleasant. Then again... we have all heard the stories. But the fact remains, famous people are people, too. That means they have their moments like you and me. Then there are those who are complete monsters. I've dealt with a few those as well.

In this episode, I tell the story of one such incident that occurred on the air.

Plus, music from The Starkillers.

Fear & Loathing in the ER

Last week, my wife Josephine had a reaction to some medicine she was taking and the end result was a trip to the ER here in Memphis. Yes, everything has worked out for the best and all is good with her. In the process of her getting some medical treatment, we had the quintessential ER experience, including the lengthy wait in the waiting room and all the characters one would encounter in the middle of the night at a hospital.

I saw what appeared to be a major flaw in the system. Not this particular hospital's system, mind you. The entire system.

Plus, being ignored by the "local media" and music from The RV's featuring Billy Gibson with song from their current EP Progress Trap.

A Chat With The Boss

Dianna Fryer & Ric Chetter with a Killer B Guitar for Radio Memphis

For the last 100 weeks, I have sat down at a microphone and said some things. I even managed say a few things that I felt needed to be said. That is a good thing. Now, with this episode we have implemented a few changes to the format. We hope the changes are for the best. Progress is not always easy and certainly not always pleasing to everyone. However, in this instance, it seems as though it has been easy and somewhat pleasing to most.

This episode was recorded on my birthday. It wasn't planned. So, for a special episode on what some my consider a special day, the stars lined up just right and this show worked out beautifully. We hope you like it.

In this episode, Dianna Fryer and sat down to talk about a wide range of things. From understanding listener trends in the digital world to how the business of show business has changed and continues to do so.

If that wasn't enough, we even added a new bit. Music. One song from one band. This time out, Rind Stars.

Our deepest thanks to all the fans of this show. It has been a real blast so far and we are looking forward to bringing you some entertaining and amusing shows in the future. Speaking of which...

Looking Back Before Looking Forward

This may not be such a big deal for some, but for us, having this many episodes of the show From Radioland. Sure, there are shows out there who have far more than we have. Then there are some who didn't get as far as us. No matter. For all of us (and me especially), this is kind of a big deal. Please allow me to savor the moment.

If you are new to the show, there are some references to other episodes of which you may not have heard. Make a note of them and go back and give them a listen. In the meantime. This is the last of the solo shows... at least, that is the plan.

The Queens of The Nile

Okay, it's the turn of a phrase. It's all about the perspective of things. Some time ago, we talked about conspiracy theories and the people who push them. This time around, I wanted to try and get into the minds of those people and somehow make some sense of all this absurdity.

We humans are a fascinating species. For some us to put forth notions and theories, with no proof, and expect the rest of to think they are right is ridiculous. Yet, some people do. Let's find out why.

The Impact of a Podcast

Don't be mistaken, I don't think From Radioland has that much of an impact. Having said that, there is a definite impact the medium has had on the broadcasting industry. That is what this episode is all about. Consider it another peek behind the curtain.

Corporate radio (for the most part) has turned its back on the world of podcasting. Even though they may offer "on demand" programming, it isn't specific to the medium of podcasting, if that makes any sense. What does make sense to me, at least, is these companies continue to ignore the impact of podcasting on the level it exists now, they are going to get bit in the ass.

A little note on the production is warranted here. For the past 89 episodes, we have been blessed to have the work of Jaeci King as the show announcer. Jaeci is now living in Los Angeles, California and is involved in some pretty exciting projects. Jaeci will always be a member of the Pirate Radio Studios family and if he finds his way back in Memphis, he will always have a home in some capacity.

The new announcer for this show is Joel Martin. He is voice guy here Memphis and is doing some great stuff for Radio Memphis and we are glad to have him step into this very important role.

How I Built The Show

Even though we are not quite through a solid year of shows, I wanted to give you a little look into how we produce From Radioland. You can consider this a behind the scenes look at the making of what has turned out to be a rather popular little show. Over the past year, several people have asked me how the show is done and how we do the layout of the thing. Here is that look.

Over the the last year, we have had some remarkable growth. We may be hitting a little goal we set out for ourselves by having 100,000 subscribers by the end of the first year of production. That is a big thing for us. We are certainly happy about that achievement and we have some great plans as we make our way into the second year of production. There is something pretty groovy things happening with the show starting with the final episode of our production year which is next week. More on that later.

For those of you who are interested in starting your own show, you can take what I talk about here and use it to help build your podcast. For those of you who are plenty happy just listening, you will get a little glimpse into how the whole thing gets put together. Spoiler: It's not that hard.

One thing I failed to mention during the recording of this episode was how we got all those subscribers. One thing is certain, we got a lot of you folks through iTunes. Not only that, this show is listed in a number of podcast directories all over the world. I spread this thing around like a disease and all that work finally paid off. Yeah, it was a pain in the ass to do it and the results are never "overnight" but in the amount of time we are looking at here, our growth has been nothing short of remarkable.

NEXT WEEK: Yeah, about that. My conversation with Josh Robert Thompson. Don't know him? Like he says, "Google it." Aw hell, I'll do it for you.

Beer Run

Come along with me on a beer & liquor run. I was forced out of the studio during an internet outage. Needing to record a show, I try and navigate the streets of Memphis without getting a case of road rage. What was amusing about doing this episode is that although it is rather short in length, it seemingly took forever to record it. You'll hear why in this show.

On another note, although I make mention of this during this show, please take a moment to click on the link on the upper right of this page. I would really appreciate it if you would take a look at where the link goes.

Doc Studard is the Morning Man at Radio Memphis

Trust me, I thought about it... The Doc Is In or What's Up, Doc? Hackneyed lines indeed and since this episode is not worthy of such tripe, it would be best to call it exactly as it is. I have been wanting to sit down with Doc to make this episode a reality for a while now. Trust me when I tell you this, there will be more with Doc. One hour barely contains a conversation that went from being a Native American to where he learned his extensive cuss word vocabulary (you'll be surprised to hear where).

The thing is you can think of this episode as a first part to a conversation with Doc. There is much more to his story than this one episode could hope to contain.

Colorful, uncensored and unapologetic. THAT is what this is all about.

A note about this podcast series: Ric Chetter - From Radioland is growing by leaps and bounds and we appreciate everyone who has subscribed to this show. If I may ask of one thing, please tell your friends about it. Share this on your Facebook and Twitter. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks and as always,

From The Written to The Spoken

You might want to read my last post here if you haven't before reading further.

Here's the thing. I now have a podcast which will now take the place (in a weird sort of way) of the written word. This page will continue to be updated as the podcasts get into the schedule. The good thing here is that there are a scheduled series of podcasts that will be posted approximately once a week.

You see, speaking is much more natural to me than sitting in front of a keyboard bashing out word after word that I merely hear in my head. So the decision was made to utilize the tools I have to make something a little more amusing for you to listen to and/or waste your time.

The podcast has been accepted at iTunes and is now available to download by clicking HERE. You should already have an account with iTunes. If not, go ahead and get one, it's free and easy. While you there, please subscribe to the thing and you can expect a new episode about once a week.

For the uninitiated, get your free podcast app from your app store and you will be able to subscribe to the thing and as they are updated, you will get the episode downloaded to your device for you to consume at your leisure. On your mobile device (phone or tablet), open a browser and go to http://ricchetter.podbean.com/mobile/ tap the quick launch icon and the above picture will show up as a bookmark that will rest right on your screen amongst your other apps. For you desktop and laptop users, just head on over to ricchetter.podbean.com

You can follow the feed from that site.

For those who are still paying attention to this blog site, guess what? I'll be posting the episodes right here.

In fact, here is the first one.
