The Return of Radio

Saturday night, the 23rd of July, 2011 was a big night for me and the city of Memphis.  Radio Memphis got it's official launch party.  We were all at Neil's.  Funny how this all came about.  What started as a benefit for the Tommy Ruble Brass Note Fund, turned into a packed house, three music acts, a "comedian" and yours truly.

The great Leon Griffin went on stage and had a nice little talk to the crowd about Memphis music and what it means to be a part of something that is going to be so huge.  Setting the stage, if you will, he introduced me and I went on to talk about the ills of corporate driven America.  Not to tout the material, but it was decent monologue.  Now, I won't go into what all was said since it was one of those things where you would have been better off there to hear it in person.  That, and me trying to put into writing the spirit of the speech would ultimately be lost.  I can tell you this, I do know that it was video taped.  I haven't seen it but I am quite sure it will surface at some point.

Anyway, Radio Memphis sort of hijacked the event.  The end result was that the Tommy Ruble Fund got a nice bit of cash, Neil's was packed and from what I was told, everyone was entertained.  Tori Tollison and J. W. Williams had a great set.  The Fast Mothers blew the roof off the joint and The Mondophonics was awesome.  Great Memphis music from today.

As a result, the crowd got to meet the staff of Radio Memphis.  We met some really great people and I heard nothing but good things and support from all that was there.  A fantastic night.  When we brought on stage all those who were responsible in part for the creation and existence of Radio Memphis, there was a great applause.  I ended my bit with the following:

"We built Radio Memphis for the Memphis Musician.  We built Radio Memphis for the Memphis music lover.  We built Radio Memphis for you.  Please support the station and enjoy it for what it is... yours."

Not a bad start.

Stay tuned...

  1. I was sorry that I missed the big show but I was there in spirit. When I was up in Chicago I had my phone playing the station and got a lot of questions and was quite happy to tell them all about Radio-Memphis. A couple of people even downloaded the app and started listening on their own right then. Can't wait till next week when we have a "real" station running with DJ's and comercials. Good luck to us all.

  3. hey ric!
what youre doing is actually quite shameful and full of shit, ahole!
you are doing no favors for the memphis musician, and instead ur riding their backs, on their work, manipulating them by asking them to GIVE you their work, FOR FREE, to fill your airtime, in hopes that you will get ad dollars, none of which is to paid to them for licensing and use of their music, either directly or through the agencies that handle royalty distribution. which means, you are using their work illegally!
    1. you dont follow the regulations wherein the artist info is REQUIRED to be displayed while their song is being played. new web site comin? sure it is.
    2. you also dont follow regulation about the time period and number of plays you give to any one artist.
    3. you dont follow regulation regarding length of the looped programming, thus over playin whomever you want, as many times as you want.
    4. you also dont follow the regulation that playlists are to be made available to the public after broadcast.
    5. and you dont pay dime 1 towards any royalty collecting agency bc u mistakenly think that bc they are "unsigned' then they probably wont be a part of those and you dont have to pay them or the entity that is there to collect on their behalf.
so basically, you are stealing peoples work, then not giving them their credit, and asking for ad dollars on top for yourself.
you have also been careful as to who you air, i.e who and whoo is not associated with soundexchange, ascap, bmi et al. because you then dont have to pay anyone.
    except yourself.
youve been in radio long enough to know these things and are doing it on purpose. youre a douche.
    and your screwing memphis artists.

  4. was that really necessary? get a grip! there ARE musicians that are into their profession because they love music, not cause they're trying to line their pockets... and it does take money to run the station,j-a$$, mlgw isn't free...

  5. I love when people that don't have all the facts vilify and condemn others who have a different viewpoint. So Mr. "fuck you radio memphis" get your facts straight, maybe actually listen to this internet radio station for a while and maybe even talk to some of the artists who have sent their music in and ask them if they feel Ric is screwing them out of anything... 6. Hey, "fuck you radio memphis", your momma needs to be regulated. According to Brooks Road Reg BJ:

1.) Your momma doesn't follow code of hygiene.
2.) Your momma doesn't follow code of time slots, booking too many at once.
3.) Your momma doesn't pay dime 1 to her pimp.
4.) You're a toolshed. This wasn't a regualtion violation. I just wanted it on the record.

  7. Hey, "fuck you radio memphis." Judging by your handle, I'm sure your intellectual acumen is the HIGHLIGHT of your 4th grade teacher's day. Don't you think that if Ric was in violation of ANY laws or these mysterious "regulations" you're blathering about, he'd be BALLS DEEP in lawsuits? People like you try SO damned hard to berelevant by showing off all the things you supposedly know. In fact, like most people of your ilk, you just happen to "know" so much that just isn't so.

  8. I love how some people love to get so easily offended FOR everyone else. Funny, I haven't heard a single local musician complain about this concept....

Hey douchebag, if all these artists felt like they were getting screwed over, I kinda doubt they'd be sending their work to Ric by the butt-load. Having the exposure that they wouldn't otherwise be getting FOR FREE seems to suit them just fine. I'm sure Ric will be more than happy to stop playing the music of anyone who has a problem with what he's doing.

Oh, and the new website seems to be coming along just fine. I have no doubt it'll have all the features Ric says it will in the very near future. When you start something from the ground up, it takes a little while to get all the bells and whistles up to speed.

I guess any time you break the mold and try to do something outside the box, there's always some a-hole who doesn't like it if you don't do things the way they've always been done. Well, there are a lot of us out here listening that really like what we're hearing. And judging by the new music that keeps rolling in to the station, I'm guessing the artists are pretty happy with it too.

So go find something useful to be offended about...and for the love of God, please don't listen anymore.
